Dear Kate,

Stumbled across your site, and what a wonderful one it is! Congratulations!

William and Alice Preston are ancestora of mine, Must check further, but I couldn't see a connection on a quick glance. Could you enlighten me please?

Many thanks, Henry

Hello Henry

Thanks for your message. From what you have written, I'm guessing that you have relatives in the Lancashire area. The Prestons are among the names I have transcribed from local gravestones - I just checked the page and you can find them under the Clitheroe Church Gravestones subsection, on the page for St. Leonard's at Downham.

There is a Michael (d.1828), a Mercy (d.1840), an Ann (d.1904) as well as William (d. 1865) and Alice (b.1868). I have also found a couple of other Prestons on the page - Ellen Ann (d. 1878). Unfortunately I'm not related to the Prestons to the best of my knowledge, but they are buried at St. Leonard's and I came across them while transcribing.

Hope what I found will be of use to you.

Thanks
Kate

Dear Kate,

Many thanks for your comment - pity you're not related!

Henry is quite correct Kate - there are indeed many Prestons in cemeteries in and near Clitheroe. I know that because they happen to be my family - and I do have detailed records running back to the 18th century (and less detailed ones running a long way further). Naturally, they include the odd skeleton - well, two in particular - but there are also the odd good things too.

For instance, if you are in fact a relative of mine then you are also related to my cousin James Robinson Clitheroe who you may recal was rather famous as Jimmy Clitheroe (aka "The Clitheroe Kid") and a very well-known radio and stage performer.

Both of you may be interested in my own family records web site at http://www.mpreston.demon.co.uk which is being built mainly as a community site for us all to add our own records and search for others. Obviously, such a site depends on the rest of the family even more than it does on me - but I do have a huge mass of records to add to the pages as they grow and will be adding them over the coming months and years.

Please feel free to visit, leave a message, join the records portion (it is free, of course) and store your own records - the more the merrier!
