I was idly Googling my brother Matthew Scoffield when I got a link to your web site. Mt great grandfather came from Denton, Lincs. His name was Cecil, John Scoffield. I suppose there is a chance that he is related to the man who married Kate Skillington.

Thanks for your message. I haven't come across a Cecil yet, but - as you say - I suspect there may be links to Matthew Scoffield, who married Caroline Skillington - I haven't followed Matthew's family up as yet but I am sure I have heard from someone that he did have brothers and sisters.

I had no idea the Scoffields were in Denton for so long. I will have to see if I can follow them up a bit more.

Just to update, I have found a few bits about Matthew Scoffield who married Caroline Skillington. It appears that he was the son of Thomas Scoffield (chr 22 Feb 1784, Denton) and Catherine Reynolds, who married on 11 Mar 1805. I think Thomas may have been the son of John Scoffield and Susanna Geeson. (John and Susanna married on 3 Jun 1771 at Denton, and John in turn was possibly the son of William and Alice, chr. 1749 at Denton, assuming they stayed in the locality.)

Working backwards from Cecil John, I think I have found a christening for him on 31 Jul 1859 in Denton to John Scoffield and Elizabeth Worrall. John seems to have been christened 23 Jan 1836 in Denton - the illegitimate child of Mary Scoffield (possibly chr. 27 Dec 1814 Denton to John Scoffield and Mary).

A John Scoffield apparently married a Mary Drewery in Denton on 22 Nov 1796. Some of the bits I have found are on the IGI and are submitted so may not necessarily be very accurate.

I will see if I can find any more out - there is pretty good coverage of Denton's records on the IGI, which you can find on www.familysearch.org.

Hi Kate,
Thanks for the interesting reply. I am pretty sure that Cecil John you mention is my great grandfather. He's listed in the 1901 census as aged 41. By then he was living in Nottingham in the Manvers ward at 55 Seymour street. My .grandfather, Walter, seems to have been his 3rd son.
According to family oral history, Cecil John married Elizabeth Smart who was a cook at Belvoir Castle for the Duke of Rutland.
One branch of the Scoffield family finished up in Argentina, having gone over therein some way connected with the national railway construction.
I don't want to bore you with what is, I suppose, a tenuous connection to your family. Up to now, I haven't really bothered with our genealogy, but I confess I'm quite intrigued by how you have already found out so much.
Regards,
David.

Hi David

I think I started off just following up the Skillingtons (who all seemed to love to have huge families) and then I came across Caroline's marriage to Matthew Scoffield and tried to see how far forward I could get. (With her being a Branston descendent, I was always interested to see how many I could follow up and how far I could get.)

I think that Belvoir Castle reference is very interesting. The Dukes of Rutland were members of the Manners family and they were mentioned in the baptisms at St. Mary the Virgin in Bottesford (the same church where the Branstons and Skillingtons seem to have worshipped). I know there are some memorials and effigies of the Dukes and their families in the church.

Hi Kate,
This is getting quite interesteing. My best friend's middle name is Branston. It was his mother's maiden name. He is a farmer at Langar, Notts. He knows the present Duke of Rutland personally, and the Belvoir (Duke of Rutland's) hunt chase foxes on his land. It would be quite a coincidence if the Branstons you mention are the same family as his mother's.
If you would like me to give you all the details that I know about my family (admittedly not a lot) I can do so.
Regards,
David

Hi David

That is interesting - as I am pretty sure there were at least a handful of small male Branstons in my tree who were still in Bottesford and the general area in the late 1800s/early 1900s.

If you want to contact me directly, my e-mail address is kate****hurst@hotmail.***co.uk (but without the asterisks - I am finding I get a lot of junk mail unless I disguise it somehow).

Strangely, I have just updated my Branston page today so it is probably more up-to-date than it's ever been now and I know Langar is relatively near Bottesford.

Best wishes
Kate
