Castledine Family, Croydon, Surrey
Dec 16 2007, 6:19 PM EST
Hi Kate,I came across your website by searching for "Castledine family" and was amazed to see two Castledines Joseph and Thomas from Croydon, Surrey as most are from Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire (as your family generally seem to be). I believe these are likely to be relatives of mine but I am finding it difficult to fit them into my family tree. Can you tell me any more about them? Who their parents and grandparents are for starters, and any information to link them back to the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire part of the family would be good as I've always suspected there would be a link there somewhere. All of the Castledines in my family were born or have a link to Surrey, and a number of them were born in Croyden hence my guess that Joseph and Thomas may fit in somewhere. Do you find this valuable? |

Thanks for your message. Joseph and Thomas do descend from the Nottinghamshire line originally but for some reason their father appears to have moved to Croydon. (There were also two sisters, Gladys and Ada.)Working backwards, they were the children of Joseph Castledine b. 1860 in Riddings, Derbyshire and Mary Ann Kerry b. 1864 in Lincoln. Mary Ann was the second wife of Joseph (he had previously married Harriet Smith and had two children), and Joseph was one of the children born to Thomas Castledine (b.1820, Bingham) and his second wife (of four) Elizabeth Stevens (1825-61). Thomas in turn was one of the sons of Henry Castledine (1788) and Sarah Dring. Hope that makes sense - Thomas Castledine (1820) would therefore be my 4xgreat uncle. Kate Do you find this valuable? |

I just wanted to add to the reply given by Kate ... my branch of the Castledine family was living in Croydon from about 1800. John Castledine and his wife Sarah Keene were married in Cobham in 1755 and had something like 7 children. I am descended from their eldest son, Benjamin. Their second son, Nathan, married Sarah Meager in Cobham, and they had 4 daughters and one son, William. Nathan and Sarah and family moved to Croydon around 1800, and William died there in 1870.
