Greetings from America
While browsing through the Lancashire County surnames I found the surname Worsley in my Sergeant data.
I Just ran into your site. I am back in time to the 1600's and before. I am trying to trace the family of Peter Sergeant of Newton, Co Lancashire, England. Turns out he emigrated to America in 1670's and was a Councilor for the Massachusetts Colony Charter, and famous Witch Trial Judge of Salem , MA in 1692.His father was Peter Sergeant of Newton le Willow, and Stand, Lancashire. They were related to Royalty. They hook up with Bradshaws, and were related to Sir Henry Ashurst, Lord Mayor and Treasurer of the King in London who was originally from Ashurst, Co Lancashire. They were eloborate Merchants of Clothiers and Drapers.
The Sergeant's and Ashurst's go way back. But I thought I might tell you that one of Peter's Nieces married a Charles Worsley , and they at least, had a daughter Deborah Worsley, who m. a John Lees. I am sure there were other children of this couple with Ralph being a repeated common name in the Sergeant Clan. I suspect that your Ralph may be a descendant of Charles Worsley. I have not found any further instance's of these Worlsey's.. The Will of Peter Sergeant names neice & hisband, Charles Worsley, and his wife, Clemence (Sergeant)of Platt, Co Lancashire. . I did find an excerpt that they had at least one daughter that m. John Lees. I am hoping to find more out about them as I would like to know their connections further to the Sergeant's and if they came to America. It sound's like yours came later...Do you have anything predating Ralph Worsley from your site?
Kind Regards,
Penny Kresl

Hello Penny
Thanks for your message - sorry I am only just replying now, I don't seem to be getting message notifications for some reason. I'm still trying to piece together Ralph Leigh Worsley (1853)'s ancestry at present as they are proving quite difficult to find. Ralph Leigh Worsley's father was James (1810) a cotton spinner, and I think James was a child of James Worsley and Ann but I haven't managed to get further back than that - yet!
I do know that there were a few Worsleys around the Lowton/Leigh area at the same time as mine but I haven't managed to link the extra ones to mine yet - I think it was in fact Ralph Leigh Worsley in my tree whose family came to Canada, although he himself died in the Ormskirk area of Lancashire. I think you're right that they could be the same family - hopefully one day I'll prove it one way or the other.
Best wishes Kate

Hi Kate I am researching my family tree and wondered if you would be able to help me. The family I am researching are the Nowell's and I have traced them back to a John Nowell who married Catherine Tattersall at Downham on 9 April 1776. Both John and Catherine were buried at Downham, Catherine was buried on 30 December 1802 and John on 5 June 1811. I notice that they don't appear on your records for gravestones, but they do appear on the burial records. I know Catherine was baptism at Downham but there is no baptism record for John, which is where I've hit a brick wall. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Steve.

Hi Kate,
Thank you for your reply. I think that must be the case with the burials, but it's good to know. I did originally think that John Nowell maybe the John born in 1746 but I found an IGI record that links him to a marriage to Mary Whitaker in Colne in 1771, but there is no source or method of verification. I do have my doubts about the link but it needs further investigation. Anyway, thanks for your help, as I say it's good to know I don't need to search for a gravestone.
Regards, Steve

Hi Kate I have just received the marriage cert for Ann Hurst & Henry Gaskell, if you would like a copy let me know & I will Email you a copy. I ordered a copy out of interest in the Gaskell line. My mother was a Gaskell prior to marriage and having done extensive research into this line discovered there was a very strong Ormskirk link. I was hoping that Henry Gaskell 1822 Ormskirk could be a relative, sadly no father is listed on his marriage cert.
I have discovered that he was married prior to Ann Hurst to a Bridget Drinet they married 13 APR 1841 Saint Johns Old Haymarket, Liverpool, Lancashire, England Bridget's father was called Michael Drinet
Burial: 15 Nov 1842 St Peter and St Paul, Ormskirk, Lancashire, England Bridget Gaskell - Age: 25 yrs Abode: Ormskirk Notes: Roman Catholic Register: Burials 1825 - 1843, Page 547, Entry 1977 Source: LDS Film 1849664 As you can see a very short marriage.
Henry & Bridget do appear on the 1841 census together living in Chapel Lane Ormskirk I will order the first marriage cert to see if Henry has listed a father on that cert but as there is an extracted record on the IGI with only her father named, I suspect there is no father listed on that marriage cert either. I will let you know the outcome.
Kind Regards Judi

Fascinated to see all these Bottesford connections. Glad you have found w.w.w.bottesfordhistory.org.uk We are currently trying to establish who lived on The Green in 1901 and have been following up Thomas Rawdin b 1873 'The Hero of Nitral's Nek. As you probably know, the 'Poor Houses', Mount Pleasant and Bunker's Hill are different names for the same cottages.

Thanks for your message - I have visited your site before and I think it's a great one. (Actually, would you mind if I added a link somewhere on the site? I think people might find it interesting.) I remember there was a photo from around 1912 of a Mrs. Skillington on the site - I'm hoping I can work out if she is linked to my tree, too, but I'm not sure how many possible candidates there are in my tree.
Actually, I don't suppose it could be Fanny Skillington, nee Dixon, who was married to the "rural postman" William (b.1845) who was still alive in 1901? I will have to revisit your site and have a look.
I didn't actually know that the "Poor Houses", "Mount Pleasant" and "Bunker's Hill" were one and the same area, so thank you for that - I have seen instances of the same areas having different names in other areas but I didn't know about that bit of Bottesford.

Hi - I am a direct descendant of Catherine Hurst / Joseph Newton who lived in Bickerstaffe, She was born in Ormskirk - He in Little Crosby. This site has added very important information to my tree. I have all the members listed already but this site has 'tied a loose end up' on one of their offspring (my gt gt grandparants). My goal has been for years to find their place of burial. I dont understand how this site works and want to speak to the owner - any ideas please???

Hello Roger
Thanks for your message - sorry for the delay, I have been trying to find something out about the Bulcock family to send to you for ages but haven't managed to turn anything much up about them yet.
Have you had a look on the Lancashire Online Parish Clerk site? I have just found a Thomas Bulcocke christened 21 Mar 1582 at St. Leonard's in Padiham (father is Christopher) - I wonder if he is old enough/young enough to be relevent to the "T" on the stone you mentioned?
I did find a Thomas Bulcocke on the IGI marrying a Jenetae Greenwoode on 16 Sep 1583 in Clitheroe but perhaps he is too old?
Best wishes Kate

Hello everybody
Hope you all had a good festive season and a Happy New Year. Since the site is growing in numbers (what a surprise that is - I didn't know I had so many relations out there!) I thought I would add this message so hopefully all visitors, new and old, can make sense of the site.
The gravestone transcriptions are still going on - I reorganised St. Mary Magdalene's data last night so my apologies if anyone was looking for it and couldn't find it, it's back now. St. Hubert's is also complete, although the rest are still a work in progress. (As soon as the weather improves, I should get some more details onto the site.)
I'm always happy to know if anyone has found their relatives on the site (whether they are mine too or not) and any data on the Finding Publicans site is always welcome. (For details to go on that page, it is much appreciated if you put "Finding Publicans" or something similar in the thread or e-mail title, so I know what goes where!)

Hi Kate,
I came across your website by searching for "Castledine family" and was amazed to see two Castledines Joseph and Thomas from Croydon, Surrey as most are from Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire (as your family generally seem to be). I believe these are likely to be relatives of mine but I am finding it difficult to fit them into my family tree. Can you tell me any more about them? Who their parents and grandparents are for starters, and any information to link them back to the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire part of the family would be good as I've always suspected there would be a link there somewhere. All of the Castledines in my family were born or have a link to Surrey, and a number of them were born in Croyden hence my guess that Joseph and Thomas may fit in somewhere.

"I just wanted to add to the reply given by Kate ... my branch of the Castledine family was living in Croydon from about 1800. John Castledine and his wife Sarah Keene were married in Cobham in 1755 and had something like 7 children. I am descended from their eldest son, Benjamin. Their second son, Nathan, married Sarah Meager in Cobham, and they had 4 daughters and one son, William. Nathan and Sarah and family moved to Croydon around 1800, and William died there in 1870. " I too am a descendant of this Benjamin Castledine. Any further information you have would be gratefully received. Have you managed to go back any further than John Castledine and Sarah Keene?
