1 Thomas Woodcock
—————————————————————————————————————————————
Birth: 1790?
Occ: Farmer (1815, 1822, 1824, 1827)

Thomas Woodcock probably died before the 1841 census was taken (his son John's wedding certificate of
1 Jun 1841, five days before the first census was taken, describes him as "Thomas Woodcock (deceased)". I
am not certain of the year of his birth but I do know that he and his wife Margaret Rimmer were married
by banns on 22 Nov 1815 with the consent of both parents so he may have been under twenty-one. It
seems from comparing records that the couple had produced a child before marriage as Thomas, their
eldest, was christened on the day of their wedding.

The baptism records of his children suggest that they lived in Bickerstaffe in around 1815 but by 1822 had
moved to Scarisbrick. When Thomas died, I am not certain - the only Thomas Woodcock I located in the
records for Halsall who was buried between c.1824 and c.1837 was buried in 1835 aged 82 so I am considering
the possibility of a transcription error as this Thomas was from Scarisbrick.

Spouse: Margaret Rimmer
Birth: c.1798
Marr: 22 Nov 1815, St. Peter and St. Paul, Ormskirk
Death: Nov 1831, Scarisbrick?

I have identified a possible burial at Halsall for Margaret Woodcock on 19 Nov 1831 which says that she
was 33 years old, a "Papist" and from Scarisbrick.

Birth: 1819, Ormskirk or Scarisbrick
Chr: 22 Jan 1819, St. Peter and St. Paul, Ormskirk
Death: 2 Sep 1870, Lydiate, Lancashire
Burial: Our Lady’s RC Church, Lydiate, Lancashire
Occ: ag lab for parents in law (1841) labourer (16 Apr 1843) farmer of 18 acres employing 3 men (1861)
Educ: was unable to write (crossed marriage certificate rather than signing)

He lived on Moss House Lane in 1841 with his new wife Catherine and her parents Thomas and Ann Bold. He registered birth of daughter Ann on 16 Apr 1843 (the family address at that time was Lydiate, he made a cross on the certificate rather than signing). They apparently remained in Lydiate - living on Pygon's Hill Lane in 1851 and on the Liverpool and Preston Turnpike Road in 1861. On 6 Sep 1858, he was also a godparent to his wife's nephew James Bold. The age on his tombstone suggest that he was 52 when he died.

1.2.1 Ann Woodcock
—————————————————————————————————————————————
Birth: 13 Apr 1843, Lydiate, Lancashire
Death: 14 Jan 1919, Downholland, Lancashire
Burial: Our Lady’s RC Church, Lydiate, Lancashire
Occ: Scholar (1851), Farmer’s Wife
Reli: Roman Catholic

Through various records, I have been able to piece together a lot about my great-great grandmother Ann Woodcock. Her birth was registered by her father John when she was three days old, and at the age of eight (1851) she lived on Pygon's Hill Lane, Lydiate. Unlike her parents (neither of whom could write) Ann appears to have been taught to write. She lived on the Liverpool and Preston Turnpike Road, Lydiate in 1861 and a book in our family demonstrates something about Ann's existence in that decade.

She owned a Spirit of Benediction (printed in 1867), the first page of which is inscribed with “A. Woodcock, June 29 1869” in pen. The name “Annie” is written inside the front cover. Inside the back cover, is written “A. Woodcock June 29 1869” and below that “A Hurst Sep 12 1869”. I suspect that this was the time when she became engaged. After marriage she lived on Rosemary Lane, Downholland and appears occasionally in the parish baptism records at Our Lady's acting as godmother either to her own nephews and nieces (to William Woodcock on 13 Oct 1878, to Thomas Whalley on 24 Oct 1878, to Catherine Theresa Woodcock on 19 Oct 1879) or to her husband's various relations (to Peter Hurst on 6 May 1879 and to James Yates on 30 Nov 1879). The family lived at Haskayne and then Rosemary Lane, Downholland.

Spouse: John Hurst
Birth: 31 Mar 1846, Melling, Lancashire

1.2.2 Margaret Woodcock
—————————————————————————————————————————————
Birth: 1846, Lydiate, Lancashire
Death: Mar 1888, Ormskirk registration district
Occ: scholar (1851), assists on farm (1871)

Margaret lived firstly with her parents - in 1851 on Pygon’s Hill Lane, Lydiate and in 1861 on the Liverpool and Preston Turnpike Road, Lydiate - then remained with her mother on Shaw's Lane, Lydiate in 1871 (her father had died the September before). On 4 Feb 1872 she acted as godmother to John Hurst, the eldest son of her eldest sister Ann, and married Thomas Whalley six months later. They lived on Small Lane in Halsall in 1881, but their son William's baptism record of 16 May 1886 demonstrates that they moved to Poplar Farm, Haskayne.

Comparing the quarter of Margaret's death and the dates of her youngest child's baptism leads me to suspect that she could possibly have died giving birth.

Interessant. I like family history and as I have exhausted the main root and baranch I had started to amuse myself by tracing out fourth cousins 2x removed etc. Thus occupied I had recently filled out the woodcock branch of my tree. However I dont recognise any of the above except James who you have christened at Lathom and me at St Peter and Paul. I will return to the subject woodcock as there promises to be overlap. I am coming down from 1600 whereas you are coming up from 2011. You can have a look at my woodcocks on ancestry if you like - Leichton family tree you would need if you opened this tree to follow this route back- go to will ayre/dad david ayre/mum ellen alty/mum amelia blundell/ dad charles blundell/ mum margery whitby and it was one her sisters margaret who married a woodcock

Hi Kate, I am trying to trace my family roots in Ireland and wonder if you have come across Woodcock in Dublin 1890-1940? Hope so! Jenny

Hi Kate, Just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed reading your research. I started a Cropper/Woodcock family tree for a friend of mine last month. He is the grandson of James, and current occupant of Moss End Farm. My tree is on Ancestry, and if there is any help that I can give to you, please ask. I hope to have some family photos soon, which I will add to my site.
Kind Regards
Tracey Hillon
