1 Samuel Rowland ————————————————————————————————————————————— Birth: 1798, At Sea Death: Dec 1870, South Witham, Lincolnshire Burial: 18 Dec 1870, South Witham, Lincolnshire Occ: Ag Lab (1851), Ag Lab (1861)
The Rowland branch of my family remains one of my brick walls, although the few children Samuel and his wife Ann produced went on to have prolific families. Depending on which source is to be believed, Samuel was either born in 1798 or 1801. The residence of his family in 1841 (which puts his age at 40) is described simply as "Village, Parish of Witham (South)". Samuel appears to have spent much of his life working as a labourer - the occupation is suggested not only by the census records but also by the baptisms of his children.
Ten years on, he and his wife lived alone at Holborn Hill, South Witham - of their three children, Elizabeth Ann had died just before the 1851 census was taken, while younger daughters Lucy and Sarah were employed elsewhere in the village as servants. The family name in this instance was spelt "Roland" and his age was given as 44. Although his place of birth is suggested as Greetham in Rutland, this does not agree with the 1861 suggestion that he was born "at sea".
That census also showed that one Rowland daughter was still unmarried and at home. Sarah, their youngest daughter, was twenty-three and the mother of an illegitimate eight-month old named Samuel Rowland. Unfortunately it was the last census Samuel appeared on as he died in December 1870 and consequently I know very little about his life between 1861 and his death, although his burial is recorded as taking place at South Witham on 18 Dec 1870.
Spouse: Ann Durham (Noon) Birth: 1797, Stretton, Rutland Death: Jun 1873, South Witham, Lincolnshire Marr: 22 Oct 1827, South Witham, Lincolnshire
Ann was a widow at the time of her marriage to Samuel, having previously married Mark Noon. The 1841 census suggests that Ann's year of birth may have been as early as 1796, although this document is known for rounding ages to the nearest five years and so I am still open to the possibility that 1798 was the correct date. The 1851 census information regarding Ann "Roland", aged 54, would certainly seem to back up this possibility.
After getting in touch with a member of the present-day South Witham Archaeological Group who kindly supplied the dates for Ann's marriage and the baptism and burial dates for the children and grandchildren she had with Samuel Rowland, I was also given some information about her involvement in a very intriguing local event. It seems unremarkable on the 1861 census that the Rowlands lived next door to fifty-three year old Naomi Tyler and that two doors away was the home of Robert and Sarah Kew, but an article from the Saturday 4 Apr 1868 edition of the Grantham Journal described a "shocking case of suicide" involving all three ladies in some way.
Mrs. Tyler had been ill for about two months. A year before, Mr. G. M. Ashforth, the local surgeon, had attended her for pains in the head when she had exhibited a suicidal tendency, and this recent illness had evidently caused it to return. Sarah Kew was visiting Naomi on the previous Saturday (28th April), when Mrs. Tyler went upstairs. Sarah "had occasion to call out to her" but received no answer, whereupon she discovered that Naomi had cut her own throat with her husband's razor. Sarah went to fetch help but shortly after she returned with Ann Rowland, and Naomi died in their presence.
Following her husband's death late in 1870, Ann appears in the census for the last time, seemingly visiting eighty-five year old Thomas Wilson at Easton Road, Burton Coggles, Lincolnshire. She is described as his "relative" but quite how Ann and Thomas are connected remains a puzzle to me. I think Ann may have returned to South Witham, as she was buried there on 6 Jun 1873. Her age was given as 77, which backs up the 1841 suggestion that she was born in 1796.
1.1 Elizabeth Ann Rowland ————————————————————————————————————————————— Birth: Jun 1828, South Witham, Lincolnshire Death: Mar 1851, South Witham, Lincolnshire Burial: 30 Mar 1851
Elizabeth Ann, eldest daughter of Samuel and Ann Rowland, was baptised on 29 Jun 1828 at South Witham. It took me a while to find her but I have now established that she was mistranslated as “Elizabeth Rowlake” on the parish records provided by the IGI. I am not quite certain of the date when she died, but she was buried on the day before census night in 1851. She had outlived her (presumably illegitimate) son Samuel by only ten days.

1.2 Mary Rowland ————————————————————————————————————————————— Birth: 1830
Mary "Rowlet" was christened on 3 Jan 1830 at South Witham. As I have not yet managed to track her down on the 1841 census, I believe she may have died as a small child.
Lucy "Rowlet" was christened 3 Jun 1832 at South Witham, and in 1841 was still living with her parents at their unspecified South Witham address. As a young woman, ten years on, she was employed as a house servant by Rebecca Baron and her interestingly named husband Naaman at the Blue Cow public house. Just over a year later, on 13 Sep 1852, Lucy married Samuel George Tinkler. They had moved to Little Gonerby by 1861, and already had five children at their home on New Street. It appears that they subesquently moved to 6 Vere Court, Manthorpe-cum-Little Gonerby before 1871 and stayed there at least ten years. Lucy died at the relatively young age of fifty in 1882, leaving a considerable brood of twelve children. She was survived by her husband for at least another twenty years.

1.4a Sarah Rowland ————————————————————————————————————————————— Birth: Jan 1838, South Witham, Lincolnshire Death: either Mar 1903 or Dec 1912
Sarah, the youngest of Samuel Rowland and Ann Noon's daughters was baptised on 21 Jan 1838 at South Witham. Aged three in 1841, she lived with her parents and two older sisters, but by the time she was 13, she was employed as a house servant on the High Street in South Witham by John and Mary Jane Cooper. Sarah was about twenty-two and a half when she gave birth to her eldest (illegitimate) son, Samuel, on 24 Jul 1860, and - having purchased a copy of Samuel's birth certificate - I discovered that Sarah was not able to write when she registered her baby's birth on 2 Sept 1860. The following spring, she was still living at home with her parents and her baby son at 1 Whyman's Court, South Witham when the census was taken.
Sarah was pregnant again when she married Searson Norris in 1865 (on this occasion with their daughter Julia). The family seem to have moved - possibly at the time of the marriage - to Greetham in the neighbouring county of Rutland. They lived on Main Street in 1871, Great Lane in 1881 and High Street in Greetham (1891).

1.4a.1 Samuel Rowland ————————————————————————————————————————————— Birth: 24 Jul 1860, South Witham, Lincolnshire Death: 28 Jan 1941, Long Bennington, Lincolnshire Burial: St. Swithin’s, Long Bennington Occ: Agricultural Labourer (1881), Farm Labourer to W. Henry Bingham (c.1900-c1925)
Samuel Rowland was born on 24 Jul 1860 in South Witham and baptised there on 7 Aug 1860, when he was about two weeks old. He lived firstly in South Witham with his mother and grandparents, and then apparently moved with his mother and her husband to Greetham in Rutland. Oddly he is described in 1871 as having the status of "visitor" rather than step-son to the head of the house. Even more confusingly, for the 1881 census, he assumed the name of Samuel R Norris, which contributed in the early stages of my research to my total inability to track him down.
Still living in Greetham, he was employed as a waggoner according to his wedding certificate on 4 Jun 1888 when he married nineteen year old Lucy Castledine Branston at Bottesford, Leicestershire. I believe he must have always known Searson as his father because he gave information to that effect when the certificate was filled in. The couple were married at the Primitive Methodist Church by Canon Frederick J. Norman. They moved to Greetham but were drawn back to Bottesford by 1890, where their second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth children were born, moving from the High Street (1890) to 7 Mill Lane (1891) to Barkstone Lane (1892) and then back to the High Street (by 1901). In around 1902, the family decamped to Main Street in nearby Long Bennington, where they spent the rest of their lives.
Fifty years after their wedding, Lucy recounted to the local newspaper how the wedding took place at half-past nine in the morning because they wanted Canon Norman to perform the ceremony and I suppose that particular hour of the day did not interrupt his other commitments.

The birth of Charlotte Elizabeth (Liz) Rowland was registered by her mother on 30 Jul 1889. As far as the census records are available, I know that she lived with her parents and younger siblings until at least 1901. She married Cecil (Cis) Dawson in Leicester in 1926 and allegedly lived at 42 Charles Street, which is not far from the modern shopping precinct. She and her husband ran a Post Office at some point and were living at 53 Biddulph Street when she died. They had no children and it is said that Liz's brother-in-law William Griffiths James was left some of her money.

1.4a.1.2 Ada Rowland ————————————————————————————————————————————— Birth: 30 Oct 1890, Bottesford, Leicestershire Death: 5 Dec 1962, Newark
Ada was christened on 30 Nov 1890 at St. Mary the Virgin, Bottesford, just before her birth was registered on 12 Dec 1890 by her mother Lucy. After spending her early years in Bottesford, Ada and her family moved to Long Bennington, where she married George Edward Dring. I do not know very much about Ada's married life but she and George lived in Newark (where both are buried) and she was apparently present at the death of her mother on 20 Mar 1941.

1.4a.1.4 Eliza Annie Rowland ————————————————————————————————————————————— Birth: 22 Apr 1894, Bottesford, Leicestershire Death: 11 Feb 1903, Long Bennington, Lincolnshire
Eliza, known to surviving relatives as "Aunty Annie" was baptised 20 May 1894 at St. Mary the Virgin, Bottesford. Her mother Lucy registered her birth five days later. She died at the very young age of 8 years and 10 months from appendicitis and is buried beside her parents.
My copy of Gertrude's birth certificate told me that she was born on the 13 Sep 1896 but there is an interesting discrepancy with her tombstone, which suggests a birthdate of exactly one year later. I am inclined to think the birth certificate is correct as another record, her baptism, is noted as having taken place on 11 Oct 1896. After her marriage, "Gert" and her husband lived on Harcourt Street in Newark.

Alice Rowland was the youngest child born to Samuel and Lucy Rowland. Thanks to her reminiscences and some of her personal effects, I have established that the Rowlands attended the Primitive Methodist Church in long Bennington
Alice was married twice, firstly to Clarence Frank Briggs (born 1904 in Newark, died 1969) in 1926. They lived in Bottesford and then in Newark, and had two sons - Rowland (1930-2000) and David (1936-1993). After their divorce, Alice remarried to William Everard Siggs.
