George Hurst was born at some point in the early 1700s and was married to Ann at some time before 1731 and
she was buried at St. Michael’s Church on 31 Oct 1744, with her name being spelt “Herst”. A document held in
the Lancashire Records Office states that George Hurst of Melling and his heirs leased a cottage in Aughton
from 3 May 1742, for which they paid £38 5s.

A separate document dated 9 Mar 1731 seems to describe an arrangement whereby Michael Parr, an innkeeper
of Rainford, was granted a half share of a cottage “on the site of the Town Green in Aughton” . This appears to
be backed up by a mention in George’s will of his land in Aughton, but the 1731 document mentions “Ann the
wife of George Hurst” and “Mary, their daughter”, rather than George himself. I am not quite sure whether
Michael Parr was a relative of Ann's or if he and George had half a share of the cottage each and George
bought him out.

St. Anne’s Parish records note that “George Herst died” 19 Mar 1772 and he was apparently buried at Aughton
the same day. Documentation from early in 1773 refers to George’s will of 14 Mar 1772, and describes him as a
yeoman “late of Ormskirk”. In this, he states that he had land at Simonswood and a messuage at Aughton
(which he had bought from Michael Parr of Aughton, so perhaps he bought Michael’s share from him), which
was to be sold on his death. The proceeds were to be divided between his son Joseph Hurst (a shoemaker), his
daughter Mary and Mary’s husband James Finchet of Liverpool. His heir was named as John Hurst of Lyme Regis.

With the help of his will (which is also in the Lancashire Records Office) I have managed to put a family together
for George and Ann. I can't find a marriage for them yet but I am guessing that he must have been at least 21 or
so in 1731. He lived for nearly 30 years after Ann so either he was fairly elderly or she was fairly young at death.

Based on the will and the online history of Lisbon College, I think George and Ann had six children but I don't
know what their order of birth was. They appear to be:

1. Mary Hurst m. James Finchett of Liverpool (a mariner)
2. Joseph Hurst m Margaret Preston (Joseph was a shoemaker)
3. A child who married John Lea (an Ellin Hurst married John Lea in 1759 at Ormskirk and she died in 1762, when
her address was given as Scarisbrick.)
4. Martha Hurst (who may be the one who married Thomas Walmsley, widower of Walton-le-Dale in 1788 - or it
could be Martha, the daughter of Joseph Hurst the shoemaker?)
5 and 6. John Hurst (d.1792) and William Hurst (d. aft. 1787) were both Catholic priests. I think William was in
France at one point and John was a chaplain of some kind at Cossey Hall in the c.1780s but there is a John Hurst,
priest, apparently buried in Ormskirk parish churchyard in 1792, who was described as a priest at Scarisbrick Hall.

2. Joseph Hurst
—————————————————————————————————————————————
Birth: c.1731 or 1742
Death: 1819
Burial: 14 Jun 1819, St. Peter and Paul, Ormskirk
Occ: shoemaker (1772)

26 Jul 1767 - Joseph Herst of Ormskirk was godfather to Mary Smith (daughter of Thos and Sarah) at
St. Anne's RC Church, Ormskirk

15 Mar 1771 - Joseph Hurst of Ormskirk was godfather to Catherine Smith (daughter of James and Mary)
at St. Anne's RC Church, Ormskirk

14 Mar 1772 - the will of Joseph's father George (a yeoman who died on 19 Mar 1772) notes that Joseph
was a shoemaker. It also states that he had a (presumably elder) brother John who lived in Lyme Regis
and a sister, Mary, who was married to James Finchet of Liverpool. George's will directed James and Mary
Finchet and Joseph to sell the land he had in Simonswood and Aughton and divide it between them. Ten
shillings was left to John Hurst, the eldest son. [This document is kept in the Lancashire Records Office and
mentions a messuage at Town Green which was sold to George by Michael Parr of Rainford. An earlier
document also held in the same office, dated 3 May 1742, concerns the tenancy of a cottage in Aughton,
leased to George Hurst of Melling and his heirs for the sum of £38 5s.]

16 May 1773 - godparent to James, son of Richard and Mary Lancaster (name spelt as Joseph “Herst”)

1 May 1776 - Joseph Hurst of Ormskirk paid £48 to the Right Honourable Sir Charles Wiliam Molyneux of
Maryborough, Ireland for eleven acres of land in Simonswood. The document startes that Joseph was
"aged 35 years or thereabouts", his wife Margaret was "aged Thirty Six Years or thereabouts" and George,
their son, was "aged Seven Years or Thereabouts". The arrangement stood as long as Joseph, Margaret and
George lived. The yearly rent, 5 shillings and 6 pence, was to be paid at Pentecost and the feast of St.
Martin. [Source - document kept in Lancashire Records Office]
