John can be traced in 1851, although his 1841 whereabouts remain a puzzle. It emerges that he was staying at the Inn of Fortingall, in Kirktown, Perthshire, Scotland. His occupation is confirmed as a gamekeeper, residing with several others including David Farquharson and his wife Cathrine (farmers of eighteen acres and innkeepers) and another gamekeeper named John Menzies, aged 30 and born in Dull, Perth.

John's appearance in the 1861 census finds himself and Mary living at Garden House near Beaumaris, Anglesey. He remained a gamekeeper, now with five more children. Mary Ann (or Polly) had been born in Gorthawer in Denbighshire in 1853, suggesting that the family moved from Yorkshire quite soon after 1851. The others - Emma (1855), William (1857), Maria (1858) and John Ralph D Siggs (1859) were all born while the family were living at Baron Hill in Anglesey.

My research has shown me that Baron Hill is not an area or a landmark as its name suggests, but a house. It had been the seat of Thomas James, the seventh Viscount Bulkeley (1752-1822), baronet and MP. It seems, though, that the Siggs did not remain in Wales for much longer. When John died of TB in April 1867, the family were living in Thorney, Nottinghamshire. The following year, Maria also died, aged only eleven.

On the 1851 census, Mary was listed as head of the household and a gamekeeper's wife four years later. Although her husband was absent, she already had a son and daughter, three year old Wallace Siggs and one year old Sarah. Mary, the children and her sixty nine year old mother Hannah Dunning lived at Pryor House in Wheldrake, Yorkshire.

In 2007, I was able to visit Pilham and was fortunate enough to discover the gravestone of Wallace and Mary Ann. I believe that their daughter Mary Ann is buried there - she apparently died of consumption in 1916 - but I did not come across any specific memorial to her.

William's birth was registered by his father Wallace on 8 Mar 1876. He lived with his family at Bumble Bee Hall in Pilham in 1881 and at Keepers' Cottage, Pilham, Lincolnshire in 1891 (although I am told that the address is technically the same place - it simply appears to have had two names). His wedding certificate shows that he was still living at Pilham on 10 Mar 1903

A family story suggested that he was a Grenadier Guard outside Buckingham Palace, however my research proved that he was a gamekeeper’s son, although he and some of his brothers were involved with the Guards in some capacity.

His bride, twenty-five year old Maria Ann Barnett, was also from Tinsley Park, although her family had moved to Retford in the 1880s, where her father was the cemetery keeper. Their only child, William Everard Siggs, was born in Boothby Pagnell on 17 October 1904. It is no coincidence that William married a woman with the same surname as his mother's maiden name - his mother Mary Ann was the younger sister of Maria Ann's father George.

Quite when the family moved to Retford in Nottinghamshire is not know, but Maria bought a house on West Carr Road at auction in 1913. (Her sister Ellen purchased the house next door.) It is noted in the Retford directory that a William Siggs was listed as proprietor of the Queen's Hotel on nearby Queen Street in 1929 and the family remained associated with that establishment until the late 1940s, when it was sold and the family moved into the house on West Carr Road.

William seems to have been one of only three of his parents' children to have married. His age and place of birth, however are inconsistent between the census records of 1881 to 1901. Given that the family must have moved back to the Nottingham area between 1861 and 1867 (when he was still a small child)he didn't know he had been born in Wales. He married Jane Barker (b. Astley, Shropshire in 1858, d. abt. Sep 1933) in the Atcham registration district of Shropshire in about March 1880. A year later he and Jane lived at Child's Ercall in Shropshire, and he seems to have added seven years to his true age and gave his birthplace as Thorney, near Newark. Again, in 1891, his birthplace changed - this time to York - and he lived with Jane and an adopted son, James Evans (b. 1879, Cardington, Shropshire) at Plaish Hall in Cardington, Shropshire. William, like his brothers, worked as a gamekeeper, but by 1901 (giving his age as 37 and his birthplace as Nottingham) he had made a transition of employment that would be copied by his great-nephew, my great-grandfather William Siggs (1876-1954) twenty years later and became an innkeeper at the Station Hotel, Westbury, Shropshire. Son James (at least, he had now taken the name of Siggs) was a working ostler and groom.

John Ralph became an agricultural labourer while living with his mother Mary Ann in North Harby, Nottinghamshire, but later became a gamekeeper like his father. He was certainly working in this capacity in 1891, when the census locates him at Henblas Farmyard, Llangristiolus, Anglesey, lodging with Charles and Margaret Jones. A decade on, still a gamekeeper, he lived once more with his mother and sister Sarah at 4 Dingle View, Llangefni.

Although I have no date of death for John Siggs' first wife/partner Sarah, I have assumed that Daniel Siggs was her son based on the fact that he does not bear the middle name Hayr. William seems to have been one of only three of his parents' children to have married. His age and place of birth, however are inconsistent between the census records of 1881 to 1901. Given that the family must have moved back to the Nottingham area between 1861 and 1867 (when he was still a small child)he didn't know he had been born in Wales. He married Jane Barker (b. Astley, Shropshire in 1858, d. abt. Sep 1933) in the Atcham registration district of Shropshire in about March 1880. A year later he and Jane lived at Child's Ercall in Shropshire, and he seems to have added seven years to his true age and gave his birthplace as Thorney, near Newark. Again, in 1891, his birthplace changed - this time to York - and he lived with Jane and an adopted son, James Evans (b. 1879, Cardington, Shropshire) at Plaish Hall in Cardington, Shropshire. William, like his brothers, worked as a gamekeeper, but by 1901 (giving his age as 37 and his birthplace as Nottingham) he had made a transition of employment that would be copied by his great-nephew, my great-grandfather William Siggs (1876-1954) twenty years later and became an innkeeper at the Station Hotel, Westbury, Shropshire. Son James (at least, he had now taken the name of Siggs) was a working ostler and groom.

He was certainly working in this capacity in 1891, when the census locates him at Henblas Farmyard, Llangristiolus, Anglesey, lodging with Charles and Margaret Jones. A decade on, still a gamekeeper, he lived once more with his mother and sister Sarah at 4 Dingle View, Llangefni.

Although I have no date of death for John Siggs' first wife/partner Sarah, I have assumed that Daniel Siggs was her son based on the fact that he does not bear the middle name Hayr. Maria Hayr Siggs, after living on South Parade in Ordsall in 1871 with her now retired father, moved to the West Derby area of Lancashire, near Liverpool. There she married twenty-five year old Thomas Coffey - a ship carpenter from the Isle Of Man - in 1874. They lived in the Toxteth Park area of Liverpool, at 29 Jacob Street. Eldest son Clarence Henry was born two years later, followed by William who was the only child to be born on the same island as his father, in 1879. Mary Ann (or Maria) was born in about October 1880, Thomas Siggs Coffey followed three years later and Caroline Jane was the same age - seven months - in the 1891 census as older sister Maria had been ten years before. In 1891 they lived at 14 Drysdale Street, Toxteth Park.

Well done with your fantastic web site. It is a wonderful resource, you are to be congratulated.

I have been helping my cousin Rodney Knowles to try and located some of his relatives in or from Yorkshire .
He started in 1950 but as he does not use a computer he cannot take advantage of all the data now available online.

The Yorkshire place his family came from are, Crayke, Escrick, Easingwold, Wigginton and Stillington

We have managed to get back to John Siggs. Listed below are generations down to Rodney.
